Zerotier

Zerotier VPN

ZeroTier is a distributed network virtualization platform that functions as a smart programmable Ethernet switch, enabling devices across the globe to communicate as if they were on the same local network. It operates through two layers: VL1, a cryptographically secure global peer-to-peer transport network that establishes virtual wires, and VL2, an Ethernet emulation layer similar to VXLAN that provides familiar networking interfaces. All traffic is encrypted end-to-end using keys controlled solely by the user. The system uses 40-bit ZeroTier addresses to identify nodes and 64-bit network IDs to define virtual networks, with fine-grained access control rules for micro-segmentation. Most connections are direct peer-to-peer, with optional free relaying for NAT/firewall traversal. Designed with principles like deperimeterization in mind, ZeroTier offers enterprise SDN capabilities across wide-area networks without requiring complex infrastructure.
